Andy Kaufman – Dead or Alive?

Has it been 20 years already? “Andy himself stated that were he to fake his death, he would return 20 years later to the day. May 16th is that day.”

Metroid Cubed

You can now enjoy an old school NES game as “volumetric isometric 3d graphics using a Voxel Sculpting tool,” which means it’s 3D now, and more confusing.
In other Metroid news, a brand new speed run of Super Metroid was released a while back, 58 minutes with 100 percent completion. And unlike those “time attack” videos that have come with some controversy, this speed run was played on a SNES console and recorded the old fashion way. For more speed runs and time attacks, please see here.

How old do I look?

This is a crazy ass project ,kinda like an intellectual’s HotOrNot, that plays with our perception and societal ideals of age and beauty. I was close to right only about half the time, otherwise I was waaaay off.

Smile

aww.. is somebody not enjoying the ride?

Dude, so fucking gross. Never eat raw hamburger.

Warning: this is possibly the worst story ever told. Ever wanted to know what it’s like to have a beef tapeworm? (Fun fact: they’re the kind that fills your whole intestinal tract!) A storyteller on The Fray helpfully clues us in to the experience of living with, and eventually destroying, his li’l parasite buddy. Don’t read it if you don’t want to wish for death at the end. (Blessedly, there are no photographs, though there are some toon-like illustrations.)

TechTV Owned

Too bad about TechTv, I actually liked the screen savers. Why do networks always kill the popular things?

heh

Yeah.. hah.

New Car?

Thinking of picking up a new car in a bit, possibly one very similar to this one. Rockin eh?

Bananaphone

Ring ring ring ring bananaphone. Warning: contains badgers.

More Bunnies

The Shining in 30 seconds, re-enacted by bunnies.
Dude, these bunnies scare the shit outta me.

Security expert Bruce Schneier

Amazing interview with one of my idols (available as a text transcript or audio file) security guru Bruce Schneier, who really should be hired to run the United States Homeland Security dept.
Doug Kaye: Now a recurring concept in your book is probably typified by this example: .A terrorist who wants to create havoc will not be deterred by airline security; he will simply switch to another attack and bomb a shopping mall..
Bruce Schneier: This is, I think, really important. I just did a hearing two days ago on Capitol Hill about CAPS II, about airline profiling, and one of the things I.m always struck with is how good we are at defending against what the terrorists did last year. We.re spending a lot of money shoring up our airlines, we.re now talking about shoring up trains. And money that we spend that simply causes the bad guys to change their tactics is money wasted.
You have a red and a blue door, and the terrorists go through the red door, and you say, .We must secure the red door,. so they go through the blue door the next time. What did you actually buy?

Me Like!

Yay, lost that extra 15 lbs I’ve been carrying around since Infiknowledge, now to pick back up the musscle weight I lost. Heh. I do all this work to get lighter, and now, I’m planning on adding 15 lbs of musscle.. haha. Yeah, sorta counter-productive, oh well.
It’s nice being a big strong guy, I love being able to help my wench out, she’s tiny, and still not quite used to the fact I’ll help with all the things she’d have to get on a chair for.
We went to the dinner theatre thing that the OAOT Social Committee set up for us. Nice shindig, I was tired as hell and sunburnt to shit, and me and Jenn even thought about bailing, but the tickets were paid for a month or so in advance, so tough luck for us if we missed it. And they way I figure it since oaot’s social committee paid for half of the tickets, it was too good of a deal to pass up.
But yeah, it was a blast, great food, and cool tunes/acting. Not bad at all especially for Moncton.

Petition against the Canadian DMCA

There’s a petition against Canada’s proposed DMCA-like copyright law up at Digital Copyright Canada:
We, the undersigned residents of Canada draw attention of the House to the following:
THAT the Copyright Act is properly recognised as being a careful balance between the rights of creators and the rights of the public (including viewers, readers and listeners);
THAT the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously affirmed this view in CCH Canadian Ltd v Law Society of Upper Canada;
THAT digital technologies have recently given copyright holders the ability to upset the balance in the Copyright Act by preventing Canadians from accessing works for purposes that have been legally granted to them;
THAT the creation of original works is nourished by wide accessibility of earlier works, including a vibrant public domain;
THAT dissemination of cultural ideas requires that they be preserved in a form that is accessible to future generations; and
THAT historically, consultations regarding changes to the Copyright Act have mostly taken place with creators, intermediaries and only some special users (such as educators and librarians)
THEREFORE, your petitioners call upon Parliament to ensure generally that users are recognised as interested parties and are meaningfully consulted about proposed changes to the Copyright Act and to ensure in particular that any changes at least preserve all existing users’ rights, including the right to use copyrighted materials under Fair Dealing and the right to make private copies of audio recordings. We further call upon Parliament not to extend the term of copyright; and to recognise the right of citizens to personally control their own communication devices.

No Images Were Harmed in the making of this webpage.

CSS Pencils is probably the most hardcore use of CSS I’ve seen – no images at all, but hey – what’s that? A picture? And you can manipulate it? Live? Yep – all with the power of CSS.
I use css on my page a lot, but damn. This is just wacked out to the point of a near PaulFirlotte.com level

Heads are gonna roll…

Ford Motor Co. is pissed at ad agency Ogilvy & Mather after O&M leaked a viral marketing ad for the Ford Sportka depicting "a realistic-looking orange cat climbing on top of the car and curiously poking its head into the open moon roof…The roof slides closed and the cat struggles briefly to escape before its headless body slides to the ground." Apparently Ford never authorized the commercial’s (.mpg) release.

nicad/nimh/lion

Paul and I were trying to remember what the specs on each type were, luckily there’s a webpage.
What is the difference between NiCad, NiMH and Lithium Ion batteries?
Batteries in portable consumer devices such as a laptop, camcorder, cellular phone, etc., are typically made using either Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) or Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) battery cell chemistry. Each type of rechargeable battery chemistry has its own unique characteristics:
NiCad and NiMH:
The main difference between the two is that NiMH battery (the newer technology of the two) offers higher energy density than NiCads. In other words, the capacity of a NiMH is approximately twice the capacity of its NiCad counterpart. What this means is for you is increased run-time from the battery with no additional bulk or weight. NiMH also offers another major advantage: NiCad batteries tend to suffer from what is called the “memory effect”. NiMH batteries are less prone to develop this problem and thus require less maintenance and conditioning. NiMH batteries are also environmentally friendlier than NiCad batteries since they do not contain heavy metals (which present serious landfill problems). Note: Not all devices can accept both NiCad or NiMH batteries.
Lithium Ion
Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) has become the new standard for portable power in consumer devices. Li-Ion batterys produce the same energy as NiMH battery but weighs approximately 20%-35% less. This is can make a noticeable difference in devices such as cellular phones, camcorders or notebook computers where the battery makes up a significant portion of the total weight. Another reason Li-Ion batteries have become so popular is that they do not suffer from the “memory effect” at all. They are also environmentally friendly because they don’t contain toxic materials such as Cadmium or Mercury.

Rockin Game

Paul actually hooked me up with a decent game, leet.

Thermochemical and biochemical conversion

First it was turkey parts, then pig waste and now straw added to the camels back. Thermochemical and biochemical conversion make use of natural processes such as enzymes, heat and pressure to create oil from garbage so one day landfills may become the new domestic oil fields.

Teacher freakout!

There are goofy news items every day, but once in a while you have some story that transcends them all.
Teacher accused of ordering student thrown from window is quite possibly the silliest story I’ve seen this year. It’s beyond the Onion. Teacher enters class and takes photo of students, one student objects, teacher makes a disparaging remark about the way the student looks and student hits an emergency button, then the teacher orders two boys to throw her out the window (where she suffered injuries). Best line about the boys “they threw the girl out the window because they did not want to be written up for disobeying a teacher.”

Back to the Future!

For sale on ebay:
‘You never will again in this accurate recreation of the DeLorean Time Machine made famous in the Back to the Future movie series. This recreation was painstakingly researched for nearly 5 years before construction. Dozens of original photographs, details, and interviews with the original vehicle builders and collectors were compiled to make sure no detail was left un-accounted for. All of the interior and exterior Time Machine components were made to last, but at the same time not damage the integrity of the original vehicle. (…) Motion picture parts replicated through archival photos and extensive research; working interior and exterior lighting system including the “Flux Capacitor”, “Time Circuits” and exterior “Flux Dispersion Banding.’
Update
“The guy who put up that Back to the Future DeLorean for auction is actually not the one who made it, and apparently he’s using the creator’s copyrighted photos of the car without permission, which previously resulted in a similar auction being taken down…also, according to the creator, he sold it to the guy because it had “a totally junked frame”. The info is here.

Well Gross

MrPromo is an Internet-based custom signage supplier to McDonald’s restaurants. You apparently need to prove that you’re a real McD’s to actual get an order fulfilled, but it’s really fun to poke aorund on the site and see all this disembodied greasebomb promo material and graphic elements.

Movable Type

All of a sudden ( for the past 2 months ) people have been hitting me up to make their websites/blogs better. Bah, I’m not a web designer, I use movable type it’s not hard to master, its like greymatter and a dozen other ready-made content management solutions. Looks like everybody just loves my idea. Good to know, emulation/imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Jenn is all hyped about the phone book, first time she.s had her name in one, heh, she.s so energetic lately. It.s so cute.
